Here is an advent scripture reading we did for one of our advent Christmas worship services.  We decided our advent worship theme would be based on the quote you’ll see below by Stanley Hauerwas about waiting and promise. We came across this quote in this video by the Work of the People.

For a creative advent reading idea, we mixed two scripture passages, one about waiting and one about promise and then we read them at the same time, alternating one line or phrase from each scripture.

Psalm 13 & Isaiah 9

“Advent is patience it’s how God has made us a people of promise, in a world of impatience.” – Stanley Hauerwas

Reader 1 – Psalm 13 – A psalm about impatience

 Reader 2 – Isaiah 9 – A scripture of great promise

R1    How long, O LORD ? Will you forget me forever?

How long will you hide your face from me?

R2  The people walking in darkness have seen a great light;

       on those living in the land of the shadow of death [a] a light has dawned.

R1   How long must I wrestle with my thoughts and every day have sorrow in my heart?

R2  You have enlarged the nation and increased their joy; they rejoice before you as people rejoice at the harvest, as men rejoice when dividing the plunder.

R1  How long will my enemy triumph over me?

R2    For as in the day of Midian’s defeat, you have shattered the yoke that burdens them, the bar across their shoulders, the rod of their oppressor.  Every warrior’s boot used in battle and every garment rolled in blood will be destined for burning, will be fuel for the fire.

R1    Look on me and answer, O LORD my God. Give light to my eyes, or I will sleep in death; my enemy will say, “I have overcome him,” and my foes will rejoice when I fall.  But I trust in your unfailing love; my heart rejoices in your salvation.

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders.  And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, [b] Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

R1 6 I will sing to the LORD, for he has been good to me.

R2 Of the increase of his government and peace there will be no end.  He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever.  The zeal of the LORD Almighty will accomplish this.
